One intention for the Garden Club is to foster an environment of health & well being through gardening. Our Chairman Indy is a huge advocate of healthy eating & nutrition, growing lots of unusual fruit & veg specifically for it's unique nutritional benefits, particularly purple potatoes & carrots.
The purple potatoes & carrots are extremely nutritious because they are very rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins (which gives it the purple colour) and therefore has a huge list of reported health benefits, including:
Dementia prevention (the Japanese Okinawans eat purple sweet potato every day and have some of the lowest levels of alzheimer’s and dementia).
Increased longevity & anti-ageing (as they help to prevent the breakdown of skin collagen and slow the wasting of muscles).
Reduced blood pressure
Preventing cancers such as colon cancer
Reduces Inflammation
Decreased risk of stroke.
Reduce blood clots
Reduce cholesterol
Plus many more
More importantly they taste great....
The pictures above show some our purple & red potatoes, purple sweet potato & rainbow carrots. Below are some links to reports showing the health benefits of these veg, including a BBC report.
